The McLean County Health Department (MCHD) is suspending use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine after federal regulators recommended the vaccine be shelved because of rare reports of potentially dangerous blood clots.
Illinois State University officials said Tuesday the weekly clinic the health department hosts on Thursday will switch to the Pfizer vaccine, which requires a second dose.
The Pritzker administration also said it would follow the federal guidance against using the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.
MCHD public affairs coordinator Marianne Manko said the health department received a “very small amount of the vaccine” prior to this week. The one-dose J&J shot was used primarily for targeted populations that health officials consider harder to reach, including college students and rural residents.

It appears several newcomers will soon join the Bloomington City Council, while the progressive People First Coalition was shut out in its three council races.
In the closest race, based on unofficial election results posted Tuesday night, Ward 9 candidate Tom Crumpler, an Illinois State University professor, led Jim Fruin, a real estate agent and previous city council member, by 19 votes to represent Bloomington’s east side.

Crumpler said the issues he focused on -- fiscal responsibility and improving infrastructure -- were well received by voters.

For Robin Dennewitz, the best part of her cleaning job at OSF Healthcare St. Joseph Medical Center is talking to the patients. And they’ve never needed her more.
They need Dennewitz to keep them safe—and for a little companionship. Visitor policies are a lot tighter because of the pandemic.
“Sometimes during COVID, they’re really talkative because they’re lonely, because they don’t have anybody with them,” Dennewitz said. “So sometimes I might be in there 20 or 25 minutes.”
Dennewitz is part of a small army of cleaning technicians who’ve kept patients and employees safe at St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington and Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal. Cleanliness and hygiene have always been important in a hospital setting, but COVID makes it more so. Some of these technicians tell WGLT they feel more appreciated doing what they do, not unlike the doctors and nurses who’ve been hailed as heroes during this public health crisis.

As Illinois rolls out the second phase of its COVID-19 vaccination plan, a shortage of vaccines is slowing the process.
Phase 1B includes about 3.2 million residents, which includes anyone over 65 years old and frontline essential workers such as police and fire personnel, teachers and child care workers, public transit workers, postal workers, and grocery store employees. It also includes food, agricultural and manufacturing workers.
The state announced Tuesday that it would be adding Hy-Vee pharmacies to its list of locations offering COVID-19 vaccinations to the public, joining Walgreens and Jewel-Osco. The announcement brings the state’s current number of public vaccination sites to 278. Vaccinations will begin Wednesday at the Bloomington Hy-Vee, 1403 N. Veterans Parkway.
