CECI to host beach cleanup for fundraiser By CECI - | Mar 10, 2021 PHOTO PROVIDED The Children’s Education Center of the Islands is putting a COVID-conscious spin on its annual Spring Festival. This year, it will host a Spring Beach Cleanup on March 27 from 7 to 11 a.m., beginning at the center, at 350 Casa Ybel Road, Sanibel. The fundraiser will help support the island institution, engage the community in a distanced activity and earn students a photo opportunity with the Easter Bunny who CECI officials are told is bringing eggs to share. Participants may purchase a ticket or contact ceciteachers@gmail.com to join a team and garner pledged support while they comb the beach. Council says goodbye to members and votes on permits, signs By TIFFANY REPECKI / trepecki@breezenewspapers.com - | Mar 9, 2021 The Sanibel City Council bid farewell to three council members at its recent meeting, as well as considered special events permits and a change to temporary outdoor signage for businesses. On March 2, Mayor Mick Denham marked his final meeting serving on the council, along with Councilmembers Chauncey Goss and Jerry Muench. Denham did not seek re-election in March, and Goss and Muench were appointed late last year on an interim basis to fill the seats of former Mayor Kevin Ruane and Councilmember Jason Maughan as they ran for office in November’s election.

Meet the candidates running for three Sanibel City Council seats By TIFFANY REPECKI / trepecki@breezenewspapers.com - | Feb 9, 2021 Sanibel voters will have several choices to pick from in the city’s upcoming March 2 election. Six people are campaigning to take up the seats currently held by Mayor Mick Denham, who is not seeking re-election, and Councilmembers Chauncey Goss and Jerry Muench, who were appointed late last year to replace former Mayor Kevin Ruane and Councilmember Jason Maughan for the interim. The pool of candidates includes Mary Bondurant, Scott Crater, Tim Drobnyk, John Henshaw, Jason Maughan and Mike Miller. Elections held for Sanibel City Council seats are non-partisan races.

CECI announces end of year effort to raise funding By TIFFANY REPECKI / trepecki@breezenewspapers.com - | Dec 15, 2020 PHOTO PROVIDED The Children’s Education Center of the Islands announced its “Give To Our Year End Goal” effort, with the hopes of raising $50,000. One preschool family kicked off the effort by donating its professional time and expertise for photos of the students, which raised $600 and got the ball rolling. An island preschool recently launched a fundraising campaign to help meet its year-end needs. Executive Director Kerra Cook explained that like other nonprofits negatively impacted by the ongoing pandemic, COVID-19 has taken a toll on CECI’s finances too.
