Residents should have an even easier time figuring out what can go in their recycling bins with the launch of a new free app Wednesday.
The RecycleCT Wizard app builds on the website with the same name and is expected to double the number of inquiries by making the search engine more accessible. The app now makes the search option available on mobile devices and adds French, simplified Chinese and Portuguese to the available languages. English and Spanish are available on both.

there is no silver bullet solution, waste is a complex game. “The more convenient it is, the more expensive it is and the less convenient it is, the cheaper it is.” Wilcock was undecided on what decision was best: “I’m there to make the best decision for the community.” Based on community feedback in 2020, council is proposing a red-top rubbish bin for items that can’t be reused, recycled or donated, a yellow-top bin for plastics, tins, paper and cardboard, and two small bins for food waste and glass.
Recology Makes Case for Rate Increase at Town-Hall; Meeting Drew One Comment
Though most Recology Del Norte customers could see their rates increase by about 5 percent in July, a town hall meeting allowing them to protest the potential change Tuesday drew a single comment.
Stringent regulations and changes in the recycling market, both locally and globally, are forcing Recology Del Norte to change its rates, according to General Manager Jeremy Herber.
But Donna Westfall, former Crescent City councilwoman and president of the Del Norte Taxpayers Association, said wages should be frozen and salaries cut before rate increases are approved. She didn’t specify if those wage freezes and cuts should apply to Recology employees or staff at the Del Norte Solid Waste Management Authority.

New York State is considering an extended producer responsibility (EPR) bill (S1185B) that, if passed, will require brands of consumer packaging and paper products to pay to recycle these materials. This includes plastics #1-7, metals, glass, as well as paper from packaging and items like flyers. If the bill passes, producers could sell only what state regulators deem acceptable.
The proposed legislation differs from an established model in that municipalities could continue running recycling programs rather than delegate the task to producers; and producers would reimburse the government for the work.
Sponsored by Senator Todd Kaminsky (D), (S1185B) is still in the Senate and House who are working on separate versions with plans to determine if they can agree on terms and language to meld into one bill.
