Eastern Michigan University has launched the public phase of its $100 million capital fundraising campaign — the largest in the Ypsilanti-based school's history.
The quiet phase of the "Give Rise" campaign kicked off in 2016 at the beginning of President James Smith's tenure. As of March 31, the campaign had drawn $73 million in gifts, according to the university. Additionally, it has secured two "seven figure gifts" it plans to announce in the coming weeks.
The public phase of the campaign runs through June 2023.
"The pandemic has disrupted the education of students throughout the world and right here in Michigan," Smith said in a news release. "'Give Rise' will help us address the disruption by providing additional resources to help students get back on track and overcome the challenges presented by the pandemic. There couldn't be a more important time to launch the public phase of this campaign."

Climate change has not gone away
Dania Saed, Year 11, Parliament Hill School, writes:
2020: the year that shook the world.
One year on and we are still in the midst of one of the greatest global crises the world has faced in history. Whilst Covid dominated the headlines, our attention turned away from other just as equally urgent issues that are silently taking their toll on the world. Climate change.
The issue of climate change has still not gone away, no matter how hard we try to ignore it. In fact, we are witnessing just as catastrophic repercussions of climate change than we have ever seen before, and Covid-19 is posing a serious threat in deferring global efforts in combating the increasingly alarming rates of climate change.

Jeff Bezos surprised some Amazon critics and followers this week by throwing his weight behind a federal corporate tax hike to help pay for President Biden’s infrastructure plan. It was a position that seemed out of step with his company’s history and the rest of corporate America.
It raises the question: why are Bezos and Amazon breaking with their peers and supporting an increased corporate federal income tax rate?

Sill Hall, home of Eastern Michigan University's College of Engineering and Technology, underwent a $40 million renovation and expansion last fall.
Eastern Michigan University plans to rename its College of Engineering and Technology after a $5 million gift from a group of alumni that includes prestigious entrepreneurs and former athletes.
Named after the donor group, the college will be called GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology starting March 1, the university announced last week, following approval from the board of trustees.
In addition, the gift will fund "state-of the-art supplies, equipment and program upgrades" for Sill Hall, the newly renovated home of the engineering and tech school. Last fall, the building underwent a $40 million overhaul, which included a 16,000-square-foot addition to the existing 93,000-square-foot building.
