Exposed Wires, Bugs, And Eviction Notices: Life In An Unpermitted LA Apartment Complex

Part One of a series on unpermitted housing in L.A. Part Two will explore the dramatic decline in city housing inspections during the pandemic — and what that has meant for tenants struggling to keep a roof over their head. Part Three will focus on a city program designed to bring illegal housing units up to code and give owners a path to legalization — and how it has fallen short of expectations. At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti ordered residents to remain in their homes as much as possible. With a deadly new virus spreading, he said, “One thing is crystal clear in the fog of these days: We are all safer at home.”

Los Angeles City Planning Calls for a More Equitable Housing Strategy

Los Angeles City Planning Calls for a More Equitable Housing Strategy News provided by Share this article Share this article LOS ANGELES, May 25, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Los Angeles City Planning released a report on the outlining bold strategies to distribute affordable housing more equitably throughout the City. The report to the City Council proposes the establishment of an equitable Housing Element rezoning program, the establishment of housing targets by community, and other strategies to ensure that equity is at the forefront of future land use considerations. The centerpiece of the report is a set of recommendations that prioritizes the fair distribution of affordable units across the City in both short and long-term planning efforts. By addressing issues related to zoning capacity, the recommendations will ensure that Los Angeles' community-by-community approach to planning complements citywide objectives for accommodating growth in a way that furthers equity.

LA Aims To Make Granny Flats Affordable To Ease Housing Crisis

UpdatedThu, May 20, 2021 at 4:06 pm PT Reply(1) LA Councilman Bob Blumenfield this week proposed exploring the creation of a citywide granny flat financing program. (Shutterstock) LOS ANGELES, CA — Everyone wants to solve LA's homeless crisis, but few want to see shelters or low-income housing constructed in their neighborhoods. So City Councilman Bob Blumenfield is looking for a way to turn the"not in my backyard" sentiment on its head. A citywide program to fund the construction of granny flats to house formerly homeless Angelenos could be enough to get homeowners lining up to invite people experiencing homelessness into their backyards, he hopes. Blumenfield this week proposed exploring the creation of a citywide granny flat financing program. The proposal piggybacks on other efforts to make it easier to construct backyard units to help ease the affordable housing crisis.
