KANSAS CITY, Mo. â Dirk Mason jolted awake Tuesday morning, gasping for air when his BiPAP machine stopped working.
"I pulled my mask off and tried to gasp for a breath of air, and I was like, 'What is going on?'" Mason, of Shawnee, said.
The device helps with his heart condition and sleep apnea. The condition causes him to stop breathing nearly 100 times an hour.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. â When Missouri and Kansas power companies flipped the switch Monday for their rolling outages, it didn't matter who was affected.
"I was actually supposed to get my car serviced today and was going to drive in and they called and said, 'No, we're actually shut down because we lost power,' Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Quinton Lucas said.
Elected officials and families alike were impacted across the Kansas City metro. April Fleming, who lives in the Western Hills neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri, was among the roughly 63,000 customers affected.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. â Thousands of Kansas City-area homes and businesses were without power for a half-hour or more Monday as the regional energy suppliers were ordered to enact controlled outages across the Midwest with demand outpacing power generation capacity for the Southwest Power Pool amid record-breaking cold temperatures.
For Evergy customers, starting at 12:15 p.m. Monday, the utility company turned off power to approximately 60,000 customers for a half-hour to help conserve power and reduce stress on the regional energy grid.
