Bay Area Reporter :: Gay restaurateur to open downtown Oakland nightclub and eatery

A well-known gay nightlife promoter in the East Bay who went into the restaurant business last year is opening a new nightclub and eatery in downtown Oakland. It will be the second LGBTQ nightlife venue in the heart of the city, and a third such business could also join the mix later this year. Valentino Carrillo, who opened La Frontera Mexican Restaurant in East Oakland last winter, is taking over the lease at 381 15th Street where the Senegalese restaurant and dance club Bissap Baobab Oakland had been operating. Owner Marco Senghor announced in December he had decided to shutter the business.

Former Mayor Billy Kenoi passes at 52

Former Hawaii County Mayor Billy Kenoi passed away on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at 52.  His death was not unexpected –he had been ill with a blood cancer called myelofibrosis, a rare form of leukemia, since 2015.    Since then, the former Mayor had had bone marrow transplants (courtesy of two of his five sisters) and spent several months at the City of Hope in Southern California.  His passing has left many people throughout the state saddened. In a June, 2020 discussion with Sherry Bracken, former host of Island Conversations on KWXX and B97/B93, Kenoi talked about his illness in what he said was his first interview in four years.  He said when he was first diagnosed, he was still County Mayor, and he didn’t want to let people know he was sick.  He said he wanted to finish his term as Mayor “strong.”

In Lod, a community brings 'love thy neighbor' to a special needs bachelor pad

Jessica Steinberg covers the Sabra scene from south to north and back to the center. A Purim carnival in February 2019, one of the many activities created by the Lod Garin Torani community in Lod. (Courtesy Lod Garin Torani) LOD — When Jerusalem-based entrepreneur Udi Marili went looking for a community to adopt an experimental apartment where six young men with developmental disabilities would live on their own for the first time, there was one place that stood out. In many ways, Lod Garin Torani has always stood out, oftentimes controversially. A tight-knit group of hundreds of religious-Zionist families, the community has been praised by some for attempting to bolster the working class Jewish-Arab mixed city, but also criticized for failing to integrate into the wider urban fabric.

Bay Area Reporter :: Political Notes: SF LGBTQ Dem clubs to elect new leaders

San Francisco's two LGBTQ Democratic clubs will be electing new leaders in January, as the political organizations say goodbye to their current male leaders. Departing from the Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club as its male co-chair, due to his two-year term coming to a close, is gay lawyer David Fujimoto. Running to succeed him is Gary McCoy, 42, a gay man who is a senior congressional aide in the district office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco). The club's board confirmed McCoy's candidacy at its December 14 meeting. Co-chair of Alice's political action committee, McCoy is the lone person seeking to become the next male co-chair helping to oversee its 50th anniversary celebrations next year.
