Nigeria star Onuachu scores goal no. 26 in First Division A as Genk win five-goal thriller

Over a week ago, Onuachu made a statement in Nigeria s national team during the just-concluded international break after scoring a goal each in their last two 2022 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho. He scored the late match-winning goal in the Super Eagles’ 1-0 result against Benin in Porto-Novo and later sealed their 3-0 triumph over Lesotho in Lagos last Tuesday. Onuachu’s heroics did not end with the international break as he scored what turned out to be the winning goal for Genk in Monday’s outing. The former Midtjylland striker sealed maximum points for the visitors in Heverlee after goals from Kristian Thorstvedt, Theo Bongonda had put them ahead.

Onuachu returns to scoring form with Genk's winning goal in Belgian Cup

So far this season, the Nigeria international has scored 23 goals in 26 matches across all competitions, which include 22 goals in the First Division A. He played the entire duration of the encounter but his compatriot Cyril Dessers was an unused substitute. Sint-Truiden, on the other hand, had Angola s Jonathan Buatu, Guinea s Mory Konate on parade while Nigeria s Junior Pius watched on from the bench. After finding his goalscoring boots on Wednesday, Onuachu will aim to build on his cup heroics and help Genk return to winning ways after Sunday s 2-1 loss to Anderlecht. They travel to KV Oostende for their next league fixture on Saturday.

Onuachu scores 20th league goal as Gent hold Genk

Onuachu s 20th goal on his 21st league outing of the season stretched his dominance at top of the First Division A scorers chart. The Nigeria international, however, did not last long on the pitch as he was replaced in the 31st minute while his compatriot Cyril Dessers and Ivory Coast s Eboue Kouassi were introduced as 85th-minute substitutes. Also in action at the Luminus Arena were Cameroon s Michael Ngadeu-Ngadjui, Angola s Nurio Fortuna, Gambia s Sulayman Marreh, Ivory Coast s Anderson Niangbo  and Ghana s Osman Bukari who all featured for Gent. Genk remain second in the Belgian top-flight table despite the draw with 39 points from 22 games, but they trail leaders Club Brugge by nine points while Gent are 13th in the standings with 27 points.
