The Classical Review was founded in March 2010 by music critic Lawrence A. Johnson to establish a single, one-stop online source for classical music coverage.
After more than a year of waiting and worry, the San Francisco Opera (SFO) and San Francisco Symphony (SFS) are back to live, in-person performances. It only feels sudden because the pandemic has destroyed our sense of time.
Both organizations have been planning cautiously for the resumption of live concerts for months. SFO predicted live opera for spring back in February and, with customary ingenuity and ambition, is making good on the huge promise with big drive-in performances and outdoor simulcasts.
No carhops or window speakers, an FM signal mix is broadcast to each car, but no one will stop you from bringing your own popcorn. Whether you drive or have friends with a vehicle, a new production in English of Rossini's perennial favorite The Barber of Seville seems a fine choice for a happy return to business.

Mother’s Day arrives Sunday, May 9, and there is no shortage of ways to spend quality time with family in honor of the occasion.
Local venues in San Francisco and beyond are preparing parklets and newly constructed performance areas to celebrate the season, as vaccination rates spark a slight relaxation of public health guidelines. Examples include District Six, a SOMA StrEat Food Park-curated outdoor food truck and entertainment area in the city, and Out Front at the UC Theatre in Berkeley, which features a street bar, casual outdoor dining and live music from 6:30-10 p.m., Thursdays-Saturdays. The Blue Note Napa is also set for a pivot to outdoor entertainment, with a robust live music series hosted at the Charles Krug Winery in St. Helena starting up later this month; and there’s also the return of San Rafael’s weekly Dine Under the Lights, which offers live music and al fresco dining on Thursday-Friday evenings.

SAN FRANCISCO — It feels almost too good to be true after a pandemic closure of Wagnerian scale: an audience watching a cast of singers enter the War Memorial Opera House here to rehearse and perform Rossini’s classic comedy “The Barber of Seville.”
