TAWAU: Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner DCP Datuk Mazli Mazlan said Ops Benteng at the border between Malaysia and Indonesia will be stepped up to curb illegal entry of foreigners.
He said the enforcement agencies would continue to strengthen their observation and operations mainly on the rat trails (jalan tikus) to prevent illegals entering the country and the spread of Covid-19.
“Ops Benteng will involve several enforcement agencies such as the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Royal Malaysian Police and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency,” he said while visiting the Ops Benteng sites at Serudong Laut and Kg Haji Kuning, Pulau Sebatik.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sandakan Commercial Criminal Investigation Department (JSJK) arrested eight individuals, including a woman, suspected of being illegal moneylenders (Ah Long) on Dec 16.

Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mazli Mazlan said the group comprises local citizens aged between 20 and 40 who acted as debt collectors, manager and assistants.
He said at 11.30am on Dec 15, a 34-year-old victim was reportedly approached by four men to collect debts.
“The victim was believed to have borrowed RM800 in September but the suspects asked the victim to pay RM1,600.
KOTA KINABALU: Eight people, including a woman, were detained by police for their involvement in loan shark or "Ah Long" activities in Sandakan.
Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mazli Mazlan said Friday (Dec 18) that the arrests were made following a police report lodged by a 38-year-old former restaurant helper who was allegedly threatened by one of the suspects.
This was after the victim failed to pay back RM800 borrowed in September.
He said that four of the suspects confronted the victim and demanded the victim repay them RM1,600 at about 11am on Dec 15.
“It was twice the amount of the loan taken by the victim, ” he told a press conference at the Kepayan state police headquarters here.
