Doctor who uncovered Flint water crisis to deliver keynote address
KINGSTON â The University of Rhode Island has chosen Mona Hanna-Attisha, the Michigan doctor responsible for uncovering the Flint water crisis, to deliver the keynote address at this yearâs commencement.Â
She will also receive an honorary doctorate degree in recognition of her courage for exposing the public health crisis that occurred when the city â in a cost-saving move â switched its water supply from the Detroit system to the Flint River. The switch, which was made in 2014, resulted in toxic lead contamination and coinciding outbreaks of Legionnairesâ disease.
According to President David M. Dooley, her remarks and the bestowing of an honorary degree upon her âcould not come at a more important time.â
