2009: Broncos Trade 1st-Rounder for Alphonso Smith
As a matter of principle, when an 8-8 team offers a future first-round selection for a second-rounder, you take it. The Seattle Seahawks sent the No. 37 pick in the 2009 draft to the Denver Broncos for their top choice in the 2010 draft. Smith lasted one season as a backup in Denver, while Seattle used that first-rounder on Earl Thomas, a three-time All-Pro safety who played a key role on the Super Bowl-winning 2013 team.
2016: 49ers Whiff on Josh Garnett, Miss Chris Jones
In the 2016 draft, the San Francisco 49ers packaged the No. 37 selection with a fourth- and sixth-rounder for the No. 28 pick. They used it on Stanford guard Josh Garnett, who lasted only three years in San Francisco because of a few injury-plagued seasons. The Kansas City Chiefs spent the No. 37 pick on defensive tackle Chris Jones, who made two Pro Bowls in his first five seasons and won a Super Bowl in 2019.

Possible clues for rebuilding a QB-needy team in an overheated QB market

I usually like to ease the reader into a topic before I start throwing numbers at them. This time, I’ll switch that up and lead off with a player comparison. The following table compares the first four years of the two Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks who made the fastest career starts in the salary cap era.
After his first four years in the league, quarterback B, leads quarterback A in every category (league MVP, first team All Pro, Pro Bowl, AP Offensive Player of the Year, passing yards per game started, yards per attempt, touchdowns, interceptions), except for perhaps the most important one, Super Bowl wins. This particular comparison makes two points. The first is what an amazing start to his career Patrick Mahomes (QB B) has made in his first four years in the NFL.

One of the best kept secrets in college football, BYU tight end Matt Bushman has been one of the more consistent playmakers at the position the last three seasons. From a physical perspective, Bushman hits the size thresholds NFL evaluators are searching for. He is able to use that physicality in both the run and pass game, where he is able to win through contact, while profiling as a plus blocker in the run game. He is a lengthy target who is a hard player to handle as a pass receiver. Bushman is a smooth athlete who is a tough matchup for opposing second level defenders. With a solid athletic profile and route running ability, he is reminiscent of former BYU standout and Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta. Like it is the case of a large portion of BYU players, Bushman is an older prospect after serving a church mission prior to beginning his college career. That begs the question if Bushman is maxed out physically. What you see is ultimately what you are going to get, especially after missing the 2020 season after suffering a lower leg injury during practice. While he is a smooth athlete, he is never going to be confused with anything dynamic. The ceiling is limited but the floor is decently high. Bushman presents as an intriguing prospect on Day Three, with the ability to contribute well in an NFL passing attack.

BALTIMORE — Baltimore Ravens defensive standouts Calais Campbell and Yannick Ngakoue will take on their former team Sunday when the Jacksonville Jaguars visit M&T Bank Stadium. Even so, Lamar Jackson remains the headliner.
The Ravens’ star quarterback delivered one of the most dramatic individual performances in the NFL’s recent history last week he returned to the field from the locker room with two minutes remaining to throw a 44-yard touchdown and lead his team to a shootout victory over the Browns. Not only did the win provide another highlight to Jackson’s career, but it also put Baltimore in a position to surge into the playoffs.

Stakes
This game has important playoff implications. The Ravens enter this game as the eighth seed in the AFC, one spot out of the postseason picture. However, a victory would greatly improve their wild card chances, and this is Baltimore's last game against a team with a winning record. The Browns are in good position as the fifth seed in the conference, but they can still win the division as they try to make the playoffs for the first time since 2002. A victory would pull Cleveland to within one game of the division-leading Pittsburgh Steelers (11-2).
