illegally. he was here in my county. five people died in my county, and that s where my heart is, in my heart is. we protect our people to the best of our ability. a texas sheriff reacting to the latest deadly mass shooting in america. this time it s five people shot in their home by their neighbor. we ll have the latest on the manhunt for the gunman. plus, former president donald trump is making headlines for hugging a woman who served time in prison for taking part in the capitol insurrection and who has also called for the execution of members of congress. and we ll have an update on the efforts to evacuate americans out of sudan, now more than two weeks since the deadly violence broke out in that country.

reporter: for those left behind, the window quickly closing to escape as supplies run out and the fighting rages on. joining us now, the president of the council on foreign relations, our friend richard haass. good morning, richard. so let s get your sense of what we re seeing there in sudan in terms of the efforts to evacuate americans. what does it take to get people out like this? and also, how do you see the future of this conflict? this is a textbook case, jonathan, of a failed state. we really can t speak of governmental authority. we ve got a real breakdown. you ve got multiple fault lines. you ve got estimates of 3,000, 4,000, 5,000 americans, and as you saw on the map, you ve got to get them across khartoum across land to the a city. it s a treacherous journey, so it s extraordinarily difficult.
