Poll shows Germans critical of pandemic policy
Germany's ruling conservative bloc met on Sunday to discuss who would stand as the successor to Angela Merkel as the bloc's candidate for chancellor in this year's election.
The leading candidates to fill Merkel's shoes are Armin Laschet, the state premier of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Markus Söder, the state premier of Bavaria. Laschet is seen as Merkel's favorite and currently leads her Christian Democratic Union (CDU), while Söder serves as the head of Bavaria's Christian Social Union (CSU), which is the CDU's closest political ally.
"We have both declared that we are ready," Söder said during the party meeting, according to reports from the DPA news agency. He said the discussion was "not decisive," as both candidates were suitable for the job.

DW has obtained an internal CDU document issued in the wake of several corruption-related retirements. The paper urged parliamentarians to keep in mind that they are role models for society.
The paper calls on politicians found to have mixed business with politics unacceptably to immediately quit the party
Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) and their Bavarian sister-party, the Christian Social Union (CSU), have been rocked by corruption scandals of late. The unwelcome news of CDU and CSU politicians profiting handsomely off of coronavirus masks and the party's disastrous performance in state elections in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate have set alarm bells ringing at the party's highest levels.

By electing Armin Laschet as leader, Germany's Christian Democrats have clearly decided not to significantly change the party that Angela Merkel made, DW's Katharina Kroll writes.
In Laschet, Christian Democrats saw a politician who seeks compromise — like Merkel
North Rhine-Westphalia State Premier Armin Laschet promised the Christian Democrats (CDU) that he would continue the course set by Chancellor Angela Merkel. By electing him, delegates have shown that they would prefer a party leader who exemplifies trust and reliability and has chosen not to take risks in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.

Seven elections
The balancing act between protecting public health and people's rights to freedom will also influence elections, and there are plenty of those in Germany in 2021.
Citizens will head to the polls in six of Germany's 16 states. In Baden-Württemberg, popular Premier Winfried Kretschmann — the first and only state premier from the environmentalist Green party — is standing for reelection in March. April will be interesting in Thuringia, where Bodo Ramelow is currently the sole state premier from the Left party.
In Saxony-Anhalt, it will be decided, at the latest, by the election in June whether the troubled coalition of the conservative Christian Democrats, center-left Social Democrats, and Greens will endure.
