The Deschutes National Forest in partnership with the non-profit stewardship organization, Discover Your Forest, is hosting a Volunteer Information Night in early November for volunteers who are interested in supporting natural resources, conservation education, and interpretive programs on the national forest. The Volunteer Information Night will be held on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Deschutes National Forest office, 63095 Deschutes Market Rd, in Bend. The event is focused on recruiting volunteers to serve in many areas. Volunteer Rangers represent the Forest Service in a variety of ways. This time of year, volunteers focus on conservation education programs both in the classroom and in the field, Snowshoe with a Ranger, and Ski with a Ranger programs, and more. winter opportunities are primarily at Mt Bachelor and/or at various schools. People interested in volunteer opportunities on the Deschutes National Forest are encouraged to attend the event. Positions have tentative start dates ranging from early April to early June. The positions filled include specialties such as fire, recreation, wildlife, botany, archaeology, timber and visitor services. Applications must be submitted through USAJobs.gov to be considered. Discover Your Forest, Children's Forest of Central Oregon and the Forest Service are hosting two virtual hiring workshop sessions prior to the application window. The workshops will help applicants learn about local job opportunities, the federal hiring process and timelines, USAJobs.gov employment site and resumes for federal jobs. The two virtual sessions will be held on September 26 and September 27, both from 5 to 6 p.m. The September 26 virtual session will focus on outlining the hiring process and the September 27 virtual session will be geared towards navigating USAJobs.gov and preparing a federal resume. Do you have questions about volcanoes? Curious about the wildlife we share our home with? Have we got an opportunity for you! Discover Your Forest and Mt. Bachelor are excited to introduce a new summer program, called "Ask a Ranger". Running Thursdays through Sundays from July 1st - September 4th 2022, Interpretive Rangers will host open-house style Q&A sessions on the deck of Pine Marten Lodge. Interested participants can drop in anytime from 11:30AM - 2:30PM. USFS Interpretive Volunteer Rangers will be located at the Pine Marten Lodge deck to offer informational sessions to both local and global visitors. Participants are encouraged to bring their questions, or simply ask the Rangers for an introduction to the area. The Rangers have a broad range of knowledge including topics like the volcanoes of the Cascades, the geology of Central Oregon, and the natural history of the region. From spotting wildlife to deciphering peaks, Volunteer Rangers will be available to share knowledge, provide assistance and answer questions. The program is facilitated by Discover Your Forest who is the nonprofit partner of the US Forest Service in Central Oregon. They have worked in tandem with Mt. Bachelor for more than a decade to offer engaging interpretive programs to the mountain's visitors, as well as robust conservation education programs that reach upwards of 12,000 local students annually. Partners in the event include Discover Your Forest, High Desert Museum, Children's Forest of Central Oregon, Sunriver Nature Center, Oregon State Parks and Recreation, and Project Wildfire. Approximately 750 school children in grades K-5th from Rosland, La Pine, and Gilchrist Elementary will meet at the La Pine High School baseball fields for a fun and educational adventure day. Archaeologists, wildlife biologists, firefighters, recreation specialists and others will staff 30 stations for children to visit and learn about fish, plants, cultural resources, animals, outdoor recreation and safety, art, water, recycling and fire. "After a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19, we are bringing back this event, stronger and better than ever!" said Christina Veverka, event organizer and Botanist on the Crescent Ranger District. "It's an opportunity to introduce kids to important environmental conservation ideas and engage them in fun, hands-on activities that they can do or experience in their backyards or in the National Forest." Outdoor Adventure Day will happen from 9:45 AM - 2 PM on June 7th. Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl will be there to greet the kids when they arrive. Kids are encouraged to be prepared for the weather with appropriate clothing and carry water with them. Attendees will meet at the La Pine High School baseball fields, located at 51633 Coach Rd.
