thanks my friend much appreciated and thanks to you at home for joining us this hour it s really good to have the capital of the great state of mississippi is jackson. the airportpi of jackson, mississippi, is called jackson medger wily evers international airport. it s named for medger evers, the civil rights leader. he was a decorated u.s. army veteran in world war ii. after he came home from the war, after the united states supreme court ruled on brown vs. board of education in 1954 racial segregation was of course supposed to end in american public schools. as you know, it did not. six months, after brown v. board they named him the first ever field secretary of mississippi so he could lead their efforts in that state to organize against segregation, to organize for civil rights. in 1963 medger evers was murdered. he was shot in the back in his own driveway. he was only 37 years old. but now37 the jackson, mississippi, international airport is named for him. and just a
downing trees. pete: first responders are actively searching for survivors, and they re just getting started. they re starting to get a better picture of the full scope of the damage now that the sun is up. rick reichmuth is tracking the storm. rick: hey, we have a new tornado warning that is in effect here just to the southwest of alabama. right there. radar-indicated tornado. today i don t think we re going to be talking about as big of tornadoes, as big and destructive tornadoes as yesterday, but some openeds across parts of the southeast concern tornadoes across parts of the southeast we re going to be watching. this is the overall storm the, the north side also will have a severe weather component later on today, maybe a threat for a tornado the around areas of lake erie just to the south of it. but this storm eventually pulls off towards the east. things calm down just a little bit odd. tomorrow a bigger severe weather threat again across parts of the southeast, and a
warnings that could persist right through the weekend, severe storm, even tornado type the possibilities. rick reichmuth following all of that. are rick, what are we looking at? rick: rolling fork is really the first town to get hit by this. they don t have any cell service. a lot of the cell towers have been taken offline, so it s the hard to get any communication in and out, we re having a hard time getting reporters to be able to talk to us about exactly what they re seeing. this is a look at the storms. this one right here, that s the path of what was likely the strongest of the storms last night, and you see touching ground just to the east of the mississippi river about 4 or 5 miles east, that s where that town is, rolling fork, and watch that line of storms. that one tornado probably on the ground maybe up to the about 100 miles or so. now they ll go out and investigate that today, as they re doing that, weather good. 9 all the search and rescue efforts that are going
