Spider-Man Webs Vs. Star Trek Stun Guns: The Taser Brothers Are Fighting Over A $7 Billion Market To End Police Killings

11:50am EDT| Rick and Tom Smith introduced the world to the Taser in the 1990s. Now the siblings compete in a $7 billion market for non-lethal weapons, at a time of intense scrutiny of police violence. In December, police in Fruitland, Maryland, responded to a report of a man in distress. They’d had to deal with him before: His seizures caused him to become violent with his family. When the officer fired, a Kevlar rope exploded from his hand like a web from Spider-Man's wrist and wrapped itself around the target’s arms. The man’s mother asked, “So, it’s not like a Taser?” The officer responded, “It’s for stuff like this because they don’t mean to hurt anybody.”

taser. you do not taser somebody multiple times. there are proven deaths. there have been many actions, lawsuits amounting to millions of dollars. there is no question, what you are doing is you are producing an electrical shock, okay, and that's the problem. remember, taser, it's a weapon. thomas a. smith's electric rifle. that's taser. thomas a. smith electric rifle. it's a rifle. it's a weapon. and it is to be used with care and consideration and caution, not as it was used in this case. these police were totally out of control. and then when someone is injured and is bleeding, instead of taking him into the hospital, where you are present, you put him in your police car and take him to jail because now you are teed off. this guy just isn't behaving properly and we are going to show him, we are going to take him to prison instead of taking him to the hospital. this is not proper police conduct. >> we will have a lot more as we cover this story. we thank ari melber, who broke this story, and dr. wecht. not associated with the case but
