Natalie Saenz April 19, 2021 - 10:27pm With the continued rollout of vaccines across the country, individuals who identify as Hispanic or Latino are falling behind. According to a report in the New York Times, 11% of Nebraskans are Latino, but only 4% are fully vaccinated. According to the report, Nebraska is slowly closing its gap between the Latino population and vaccination rates. Dr. Athena Ramos, a professor at the University of Nebraska Medical Center said a total of 12% of Latinos in the state are either partially or fully vaccinated.

Together 4 Fremont co-founders to speak during Civic Nebraska panel

A virtual panel featuring Together 4 Fremont founders Brent Cudly and Erica Kobza will discuss the importance of social connectedness on Tuesday.  The panel, titled "Social Connectedness Across Different Backgrounds, will be hosted by Civic Nebraska and will begin at noon. The event will feature panelists from both rural and urban communities, including Valeria Rodriguez of Empowering Families in Scottsbluff and Joseline Reyna of the Multicultural Coalition of Grand Island.  Together 4 Fremont is a program based at Fremont Public Schools and is centered on advocating for issues of inclusivity, equity, access and anti-racism. Cudly, the director of professional learning at FPS, said the decision to take part in the panel was an easy one since it was based on a topic that Together 4 Fremont values.

Youth and families program gears up for spring session

NEWTON — Catawba County 4-H has recently graduated its first cohort of families from the new Empowering Youth and Families program and is accepting registration for the spring group. Empowering Youth and Families (EYFP) brings together middle-school-age youth and their caregiver for 10 weekly sessions with the program goal of reducing youth substance use through first strengthening the family unit. Stella Carpenter, a parent, who participated in the program summarized, “The program is largely about building strong family relationships and educating youth so they will make wise choices.” The spring session of Empowering Youth and Families will be offered on Thursdays starting March 11, from 6-8 p.m. via Zoom.
