HGTV's Nicole Curtis wins dispute over Detroit home project

HGTV's Nicole Curtis wins dispute over Detroit home project May 21, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail FILE - In this March 8, 2021 file photo, a house, in need of repair, sits along East Grand Boulevard, in Detroit. Nicole Curtis, the star of HGTV's "Rehab Addict Rescue," has won a dispute with Detroit over ownership of a blighted home. Curtis said she has spent at least $60,000 to start fixing up the home after buying it from a couple for $17,000. But the Detroit Land Bank Authority stepped forward and said it was the actual legal owner. Wayne County Judge Tim Kenny ruled in Curtis' favor, saying her renovation group had recorded a title to the property before the Land Bank did, The Detroit News reported Friday.  (John Greilick/Detroit News via AP)John Greilick/AP

Philanthropy, city announce $5M for home renovation program

Detroit home renovation program to get $5M injection April 15, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail DETROIT (AP) — Detroit and the Rocket Community Fund said Thursday that they are contributing $5 million to a program that renovates houses and provides better access to financing for existing and potential homeowners. The funding is expected to add at least 200 homes across 10 Detroit neighborhoods to the Rehabbed & Ready program, which turns blighted single-family homes owned by the Detroit Land Bank Authority into move-in ready ones. The land bank oversees the renovations. The $2.5 million from the Rocket Community Fund will finance renovations and help cover the gaps between construction costs and the sale prices of homes.
