referendum. all of this goes on. and it s still happening. selma abdulazeez, thank you for your reporting. great to have you here. ukrainian forces are still in control of kyiv, even as the shelling continues near the capital. frederik pleitgen is there with more. hi there, john. by and large, maybe today was a little bit more quiet than what we ve seen over the last couple of days. especially this week. however, there were still those air raid sirens going off. we heard some shelling and automatic weapons fire as well and you know that could be, in part, due to the fact the ukrainians are saying they re pressing those counteroffensives to try and push russian forces back. a lot of that is happening toward the northwest of the city and toward the northeast of the city as well. what we saw today is we managed to get up to a small town, a village, to the north of kyiv and the people who live there, the few still remaining, they tell us that russian forces
really threw everything off script. surprising many of his aides when the president seemed to suggest that he wanted to see regime change in russia. now even before president biden departed poland, the white house sought to clarify and walk back those comments saying that that s not exactly what the president meant. that is something that was reiterated by the secretary of state, antony blinken, a bit earlier today. the president, the white house made the point last night that, quite simply, president putin cannot be empowered to wage war or engage in aggression against ukraine or anyone else. as you know, and as you ve heard us say repeatedly, we do not have a strategy of regime change in russia or anywhere else for that matter. in this case, as in any case, it s up to the people of the country in question. it s up to the russian people. but still, those comments from president biden reverberated around the world very quickly, drawing a quick
