Apple Offering Free MacBook Battery Replacements for Some Models Feb 10, 2021 19:31 GMT
2017 MacBook Pro eligible for the free battery repairs
Apple has launched a new program to replace the battery of some MacBook Pro models at no cost if they can’t charge past 1 percent.
The company explains that only 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models are included in this program, and customers need to reach out to Apple support to have their batteries replaced free of charge.
Only “a small number” of devices seems to be affected, Apple says.
“A very small number of customers with 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro computers have experienced an issue with the battery not charging past 1%. The battery health status on these devices will also indicate "Service Recommended." If the status indicates that your battery is Normal, your battery is not affected by this issue,” Apple explains in a support document.
Apple on Tuesday released macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 to address a bug that prevented batteries in some 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models from charging past 1%.

Apple is offering free battery replacement for 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models that refuse to charge past 1% following the release of macOS Big Sur 11.2.1. The update also fixes the sudo bug reported earlier this week.
In a support document, Apple says that a small number of 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro owners might not charge past 1% and show a “Recommended Service” message in the battery menu. In such cases, Apple recommends users to contact their nearest Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Provider. The macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 or the supplemental macOS Catalina 10.15.7 update released by Apple today prevents the issue from happening on other Macs from the same year.
Apple has identified an issue that renders 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro models unable to charge above 1%, saying it will replace compromised batteries for free.

It's an unfortunate fact of life that over time all laptop batteries become less efficient. The machine that once got your through the day will eventually only last a couple of hours -- perhaps even less.
