Die Ärzte hätten den geplanten Eingriff am Sonntagabend vorgenommen, teilte Vatikan-Sprecher Matteo Bruni kurz vor Mitternacht mit. Der Heilige Vater reagierte gut auf den Eingriff, der unter Vollnarkose durchgeführt wurde , hiess es weiter. Wie lange er in der Poliklinik Agostino Gemelli in Rom bleiben wird, wurde nicht mitgeteilt.
Franziskus hat nach Vatikan-Angaben eine Darmkrankheit. Durch diese bilden sich Ausstülpungen in der Darmwand, die sich entzünden können. Ärzte sprechen in diesem Fall von einer Divertikulitis. Sie bereitet den Patienten mitunter Schmerzen oder kann Fieber verursachen. Es ist eine Krankheit, die häufig bei älteren Menschen auftritt. Papst Franziskus ist 84 Jahre alt.
