The final Utah State University football game of the season was canceled last week after players expressed concerns over comments they said President Noelle Cockett made about the religious and cultural background of interim coach Frank Maile.
The statement the team made announcing their decision did not specify what Cockett’s comments were and now the USU Board of Trustees is calling for an independent review of the players’ concerns. According to the team, the president’s comments were in relation to the conversation about whether or not Maile would be hired as the new head coach.

Boise State and San Jose State will play next week for the Mountain West championship.
They are staggered but still standing after an eight-week series of challenges in the Mountain West as with every conference across the country that were more demanding than anything anyone could have come up with on “Survivor.”
Only two of the conference’s 12 teams Nevada and Hawaii played all eight games on their schedule, although not without some site changes.
Two other teams Air Force and Colorado State managed to play only four conference games.

After his final football game as interim head coach was canceled after Utah State s players elected to opt out of their game with Colorado State following allegations of racial and cultural bias by the university administration in the hiring search, Maile released a statement of regret through a public relations team saying he s heartbroken and disheartened by the recent spell of allegations.
Maile, who twice served as interim head coach at Utah State and most recently after the university fired Gary Andersen three weeks into the 2020 season, released a statement to the media through Salt Lake City-based public relations agency Wilkinson Ferrari and Co., whose clients have included Eccles Theater, Rio Tinto and others. The Aggies hired Blake Anderson on Saturday, and will introduce the former Arkansas State coach at a virtual press conference Monday in Logan.

Utah State football team players have opted out of their regular-season finale Saturday against Colorado State, citing alleged comments from university president Noelle Cockett regarding interim head coach Frank Maile s religious and cultural background.
The team issued a statement to Brett McMurphy of Stadium that began as follows: The Utah State football players have decided to opt out of our game against Colorado State due to ongoing inequality and prejudicial issues between the players, coaches, and the USU administration. On Tuesday, December 8th, the Utah State University Football Leadership Council held a zoom meeting with Noelle Cockett, President of USU, and John Hartwell, the Athletic Director. The purpose of the meeting was to have a say in the search for our new head coach. During the meeting, we voiced our support for Interim Head Coach Frank Maile.
