emancipation. it documents the end of slavery, family ties and private victories and challenges facing the newly freed. the new york times review of his , edwardook baptist declared that ira berlin ranks as one of the greatest historians of slavery in the united states. when people argue about what the past means, they are usually debating about the present and it would be hard to think of a period in american history more relevant to the present then reconstruction era. the arguments about whether reconstruction worked, what to do today to ship tomorrow shape tomorrow. ira berlin has written extensively on american history atlantic world in the 18th and 19th century. please welcome ira berlin. [applause] jonathan jarvis: good afternoon. it is a great honor for me to be here with you at this incredible luncheon to celebrate the legacy and contributions of african americans to the memory of the united states of america. i would to thank a few folks for us. dr. evelyn higginbotham, barbara done, sylvia ferris. in 2016, the national park service and foss allah are celebrating your centennial. this is held by african-american memories. the theme is directly connected to the national park service and it caused us to reflect on the legacy of african americans. our national
denied the right to serve on juries. certainly cannot vote, but the most heinous problem during this period was the apprenticeship laws. a lot of us think that black men were rounded up and jailed, if they did not have visible means of support. if they do not have employment. the real tragedy, i think, of his early period, starting right and 1867 war into 1866 was the apprenticeship of african-american children. children being return to former owners and forced to labor for them because the parents were deemed indigent. people who have fought for their freedom now losing their children to the very people who had helped them enslaved. and then of course you have southerners who had returned, ex-confederates, returning to congress after having been responsible for a four-year war. so what really brings this new form of reconstruction and the whole congressional reconstruction is the outrage that this war has been fought. and although the union , you hady won former confederates
