The late-spring freeze that blanketed the South resulted in a devastating shortage for Georgia peach farmers, with a reported 90% crop loss across the board. And it wasn t just the Peach State s peaches, which are a major industry in Georgia, that were affected.
The rich, buttery flavor of pecans will be on full display at retail this month and going forward into the holidays. While pecan suppliers indicate the crop is not a record breaker this season, a robust and healthy crop is anticipated. Inflation, while impacting procurement and distribution operations across the produce industry, is not expected to greatly impact the pecan market.

Genuine Georgia Group is well prepared to meet customers’ needs when it comes to peaches because of its relationships with all five of Georgia’s commercial peach farms Pearson Farm and Lane Southern Orchards in Fort Valley, Taylor Orchards in Reynolds, Dickey Farms in Musella and Fitzgerald Fruit Farms in Woodbury.
Genuine Georgia’s focused efforts also center around pecans and Southern satsumas, and the company sees big growth on the horizon for all three of these segments.
“All three of those items are super special and chocked full of flavor,” said Duke Lane, one of the partners in the Fort Valley, GA-based company. “That is what keeps our excitement each year. On top of those amazing commodities, the growers we work with do a phenomenal job on the growing side.”

Produce in Georgia that display the Georgia Grown label are strong sellers in the state, as consumers know to trust these locally-grown products.
Duke Lane, one of the partners in the Fort Valley, GA-based Genuine Georgia Group, credits the leadership of the state’s Department of Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black and his team for helping Georgia’s farmers survive and thrive by championing this program.
Lane also says Georgia growers do well because many are fifth- and sixth-generation family farmers who are dedicated to doing things the correct way. Plus, Georgia has a soil composition and growing environment that is considered one of the sweetest spots on earth, and its proximity to the Eastern United States keeps the state’s products the freshest in the nation.
