Iraq Recovers 23,000 Sumerian, Babylonian, Assyrian Archaeological Artifacts

Iraq has successfully recovered over 23,000 archaeological pieces during the past three years, with many of them being distributed between the US and Britain, according to Ahmed Al-Alyawi, who heads the House of Manuscripts body. Al-Alyawi, who is also a spokesperson of Iraq’s Culture Ministry, also revealed the presence of 25 archaeological missions currently operating in Iraq, in collaboration with Iraqi experts, spanning German and Italian institutes and universities.

Spanish police on Monday seized a 1,900-year-old Roman marble bust among a trove of 119 archaeological objects found during a raid conducted as part of an investigation to dismantle a trafficking ring. Police found the artworks in a storage room in Baena - a town near Cordoba in the southern Andalusia region - and said a married couple had been arrested on suspicion of trying to sell art treasures on the black market.

The WDO shortlisted the Saudi capital after a competition among world capitals that resulted in two successful bids, with the final selection scheduled to be announced next September, state news agency SPA reported. Saudi Arabia’s Architecture and Design Commission developed Riyadh’s bid for the title, designated every two years through a year-long program of events.
