THE achievements of nine remarkable young people have been recognised in the 2021 Pride of Somerset Youth Awards. In an online ceremony released today, Somerset Day, BBC Radio Somerset’s breakfast programme presenter Claire Carter congratulated the winners. Each young person has received a certificate and a gift voucher with support from the Rotary Club of Taunton, Somerset Day Community Interest Company, Avon and Somerset Police and Young Somerset. Gabrielle Harrison started a community newspaper which they delivered to residents of their village, West Buckland. Despite returning to school they continue to edit the publication and spend weekends delivering it to the appreciative readers. The nomination emphasized that Sophie and Gabrielle have not charged a penny for the paper but instead enjoy the positive impact their efforts have had on local residents.

The money will help to establish new centres, train thousands more leaders and volunteers, and provide targeted help to young people who need specialist support to complete their award, the DofE Award charity said.
It was announced just days after Prince Philip's death aged 99.
Celebrities involved with the scheme have welcomed the funding and said the award can make a huge difference to young people's lives.
Former EastEnders star Ross Kemp said: "The DofE has been life changing for so many and I have witnessed first-hand the impact taking part can have on young people."

A new fund to help a million more young people achieve a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has been launched in memory of its founder.
The Living Legacy Fund will aim to give youngsters in the UK from wide ranging backgrounds the chance to complete a DofE Award over the next five years.
The money will help to establish new centres, train thousands more leaders and volunteers and provide targeted help to young people who need specialist support to complete their award, the DofE Award charity said.
