The curtains yesterday fell on Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama, ending an illustrious career in public service where he served as teacher and tea director before rising to be a political stalwart in the larger Gusii region.
Nyagarama, 74, was elected in 2013 after unsuccessfully trying to clinch the West Mugirango parliamentary seat on two occasions.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga, Deputy President William Ruto, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Council of Governor’s chairman Wycliffe Oparanya yesterday led Kenyans in paying tribute to Nyagarama.
“As a nation, death has robbed us of a gifted leader whose primary mission was to transform the lives of the residents of Nyamira through his county government’s development initiatives,” President Kenyatta said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday morning sent his condolences to the family of Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama who passed on while receiving treatment at Nairobi Hospital.
The Head of State described the deceased as a distinguished and true servant of the people whose contribution to the development of the tea sector in Kenya and service to the people of Nyamira County shall be dearly missed.
The President eulogized Nyagarama, 74, as an approachable and kind leader who carried out his duties with diligence.

Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama becomes the fourth governor in the country to die in office since 2013.
Under the Kenyan law, in the event of the death of a sitting governor, the deputy governor takes over office for the rest of the term.
Nyeri county has had the misfortune of losing two sitting governors; Nderitiu Gachagua and Dr Wahome Gakuru.

In February 2017, then Nyeri governor Nderitu Gachagua died at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London while undergoing treatment for pancreatic cancer.
#RIPNyagarama: Kenyans, political leaders mourn Nyamira Governor

Kenyans joined political leaders in mourning the Nyamira Governor John Obiero Nyagarama. The family confirmed that Nyagarama, 74, died on Friday, December 18, at Nairobi Hospital where he had been admitted to an intensive care unit.
"We have lost our governor but we will release more details after the family has settled. Information on the cause of his death will be conveyed by the family spokesperson."
Governor Nyagarama is the latest prominent leader in the counrty to succumb to Covid-19 complications.
The Orange Democratic Movement leader Raila Odinga mourned the Governor saying he “will forever cherish moments with him on duty and as personal friends.”
