NASA’s Lucy mission flew past an asteroid nicknamed Dinky, only to discover an even smaller space rock orbiting it

The Lucy spacecraft made the discovery during Wednesday's close flyby of the asteroid Dinkinesh in the main asteroid belt beyond Mars.

It turns out that the asteroid Dinkinesh has a dinky sidekick — a mini moon.

The little asteroid visited by NASA's Lucy spacecraft this week had a big surprise for scientists _ a mini moon.

The NASA mission's first close flyby came with an exciting surprise: Dinkinesh is a binary asteroid featuring not one but two space rocks.

The discovery was made during Wednesday’s flyby of Dinkinesh, 300 million miles (480 million kilometers) away in the main asteroid belt beyond Mars.

Nasa's Lucy spacecraft, named after a Beatles song, got a surprise this week when it got two asteroids for the price of one.
