Hoover historians celebrate new grave markers at Birmingham cemetery AL.com 5/1/2021 Greg Garrison, al.com © Greg Garrison Jim Langley, president of the Hoover Historical Society, gives a tour of Oak Hill Cemetery in downtown Birmingham. Jim Langley, president of the Hoover Historical Society, led a guided tour through Oak Hill Cemetery in downtown Birmingham on Friday morning and many of those following him through the oak-shaded lanes were descendants of one of the famous families buried there. “The people that founded Birmingham are pretty much all buried here,” said Langley, author of “Tales of Oak Hill,” about the 1871 cemetery located just west of the BJCC Legacy Arena. The cemetery was founded the same year as Birmingham, 150 years ago.

Stunning that Amazon's groundbreaking union vote is in Alabama

Stunning that Amazon’s groundbreaking union vote is in Alabama Updated Feb 14, 2021; Today’s guest columnist is Eli Cohen. When I first saw that Amazon’s biggest unionization effort to date was taking place here in Birmingham, I couldn’t believe what I was reading. I grew up in Birmingham. I was no expert, but I thought I understood Alabama politics. I didn’t know everything, but I was confident Alabama was not going to be the site of Amazon’s first domestic union showdown. But as voting begins at the company’s Bessemer facility, that is exactly what’s happening.
