Both had a driving force in the form of a Party organisation: the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (NSDAP) in Germany and the Communist Party in the Soviet Union. Both had a man at the top: Hitler in Germany and Stalin in the Soviet Union. Both had a secret police. It was called  Geheime Staatspolizei (Gestapo) in Germany. In the Soviet Union it went under various names: Cheka, GPU, OGPU, NKVD, MVD, KGB. The most powerful man after the Great Leader was the Head of the Secret Police, but he never was in a position to replace the Leader.
