Ilkley garden to open to the public for charity

A WELL-known garden on the edge of Ilkley Moor is to open to the public again under the NGS ‘Open Garden’ scheme, after a short break. The part-woodland garden of Lyn and Phil Short, at 5 Hill Top, Westwood Drive, Ilkley, will open its gates to visitors on Wednesday, May 26 and Sunday, May 30, from 11am to 4pm on both days. Admission is £4, with children under 11 free. Refreshments will be available and a plant stall. Payments can be made electronically or by cash. All proceeds will go to NGS charities, which include Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie and Hospice UK. Last year, the National Garden Scheme donated £2.88 million, despite the pandemic. The owners ask visitors to act with common-sense and park considerately. Over the years this garden has contributed almost £14,000 to the charities, thanks to visitors’ generosity and the owners hope to add further to this amount in 2021. The garden features a stream, bridges and a summerhouse with views over Ilkley.

NHS sets up mental health hubs for staff traumatised by Covid

A hospital ward. Almost half of doctors, nurses and other ICU staff have reported symptoms of PTSD, severe depression or anxiety. Photograph: Peter Byrne/PA A hospital ward. Almost half of doctors, nurses and other ICU staff have reported symptoms of PTSD, severe depression or anxiety. Photograph: Peter Byrne/PA Mon 22 Feb 2021 02.00 EST The NHS is setting up dozens of mental health hubs to help staff who have been left traumatised by treating Covid patients during the pandemic. There is mounting concern that large numbers of frontline workers have experienced mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder over the last year.

Exclusive: Pressure on hospices 'relentless' as patients rise by one-third compared to first Covid wave

Some hospices have set up entire coronavirus wards within their buildings as more patients with Covid-19 are discharged to relieve pressure on the NHS. At Ashgate Hospice in Chesterfield, two of their inpatient wings are now designated solely for coronavirus patients discharged from the Chesterfield Royal Hospital, which reported earlier this month that all 16 of its ICU beds were full. The hospice s Chief Executive Barbara-Anne Walker told us she is proud of the work they do relieving pressure on the health system, but said they need more government funding to carry on their work. The money we get from the NHS doesn t cover our costs under normal circumstances, and the additional money [from the government] is really very welcome but is only for just now and it doesn t cover all of our costs, Ms Walker said.

Retired Oaklands teacher Brian Oxberry's Christmas Carol fundraising marathon

You recite the whole of Charles Dickens A Christmas Carol, of course - 100 times. Former Oakland teacher Brian Oxberry did it all in just 26.2 days, too - making 100 performances in a marathon of days. I was a bit worried that my voice might wear out! he admitted. But if anything it got stronger! Brian, a member of the Malton Dickens Society who has been performing his 40-minute adaptation of A Christmas Carol to local audiences for years, started his marathon on November 23. He completed it with nine recitals in front of a small and socially-distanced audience at the Friends Meeting House in York last Friday and Saturday.
