Five new Aboriginal homes set for Dickson

A NEW housing development for elderly Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will open to its first tenants by the end of the year. Named Ningulangu, meaning “belonging to: home, place”, the five two-bedroom, single-storey homes in Dickson will provide future tenants with flexibility for a range of changing needs, including ageing in place. During a smoking ceremony held this morning (May 14) at the site, Housing Minister Yvette Berry said that in designing the project, planners had learned from similar projects.  This is the third Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander older persons’ housing project to be built in Canberra, following Gundji Gindilan in Lyons in 2020 and Mura Gunya in Kambah in 2016, delivering a total of 15 homes across the ACT.

Barr backflips on 'crazy' gas proposal | Canberra CityNews

Chief Minister Andrew Barr. CHIEF Minister Andrew Barr has changed his opposing view on the ACT Greens’ pre-election proposal to phase out natural gas by 2040.  It was a proposal that Mr Barr labelled as “crazy” in September, a month before six Greens members were voted into the ACT Legislative Assembly, three of which have now taken up ministerial positions in the Labor/Greens government. Despite Mr Barr’s opposing views at the time, “we are not going to be gas-shaming people”, he had said, Housing Minister Yvette Berry yesterday (April 7) announced no new suburbs in Canberra will be connected to gas.

Housing figures the government does not want residents to know

THE ACT government has boasted about leading the nation over affordable access to public and community housing, but recent figures suggest Canberra renters are paying a hefty price tag. The Productivity Commission released data this week as part of the 2021 report on Australian government services that Housing Minister Yvette Berry pointed out demonstrates that the territory “continues to perform above the national average”. “Every Canberran, no matter their circumstances, should have access to safe and affordable housing that suits their needs,” she said. But the report also goes on to highlight that in the ACT, residents in three out of the four socio-economic categories spend the highest proportion of their incomes on rent.
