Bidding to become the oldest winner in major history, Phil Mickelson will take a slender lead into the final day of the 103rd US PGA Championship after an extraordinary third round at Kiawah Island.
Eight years after claiming his fifth major title in the 2013 Open and 16 years on from winning the US PGA title at Baltusrol, Mickelson produced some vintage golf to surge into a five-shot lead, only to see it wiped out six holes later.

There is an old adage about those prone to aches and ailments getting wrapped in cotton wool for their own protection. Such self-preservation featured in Justin Rose’s build-up to this 85th edition of the Masters tournament and, so far, that approach would appear to have worked in the Englishman’s quest to add a green jacket to his wardrobe.

The azaleas and flowering dogwoods acted as pretty decorative diversions, for – in truth – the real threat to players in this 85th edition of the Masters tournament came on the short grass. Slick, fast and firm greens provided an examination of the most important clubs in the bag where players’ ability to make approaches stick and then for the putter to do the job required of it meant for contrasting fortunes.

Perhaps, with this 85th edition of the Masters at Augusta National Golf Club even allowing for the limited return of patrons, having been played behind-closed doors last November; while the move back to a springtime setting has ensured that the azaleas et al are blooming and, perhaps most pertinently of all, that the course will likely play firm and fast.
