Monmouth County Senator seeks resumption of in-person learning

Get our free mobile app Senator O'Scanlon said a Monmouth County campaign to vaccinate teachers continues and it's success so far is reason to support resuming in person classes in a couple weeks. “We’re proud of our role in this program that has vaccinated more than 2,100 educators in less than a month,” O’Scanlon (R-13) said in a statement. “Let’s be clear … overwhelming evidence indicates vaccinating teachers is not a scientific necessity to safely bring students back into the schools, but we know many of our instructors will feel more comfortable about returning to school once they have had the shots. It will help eliminate the staff shortages and extended quarantines that have prevented schools from returning to business as usual.”

Middle and High School Students in West Hartford Return to In-Person Learning Today

Some middle school and high school students in West Hartford returned to in-person learning on Wednesday. Mike's mom, Lynne Kirkutis, said she thinks there are some nerves, but it’s time and the kids need to get back. Her children are in elementary school, middle school and high school and said online learning "was a bit much." "It’s difficult. You have to adapt. You know, I’m trying to work from home to so it’s hard. Lucky my kids were pretty independent, so I think it’s time," she said.  The change does not impact anyone who has elected remote learning for the full school year, Moore added.

"Although we expect we may still be wearing masks, we are hopeful that social distancing will be less of a concern."The university announced it will have secondary plans in place in case additional steps are needed to continue to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, such as allowing for extra space in classrooms. COVID-19 testing will still continue to some degree, and isolation space will be available for students who are not fully vaccinated and test positive."We are eager to return to a more typical Loyola University Maryland education and experience with all the in-person opportunities that our students have come to enjoy," Linnane said. New Jersey COVID Update: All schools expected to be open for full time in-person learning by start of 2021-2022 academic year

TRENTON, New Jersey (WABC) -- Governor Phil Murphy said Wednesday that New Jersey expects to have all schools open for full-time in person learning by the start of the 2021-2022 academic year. The state has now distributed more than 3 million COVID-19 vaccines, with 1.1 million people fully vaccinated, and Murphy said the focus on vaccinating teachers will only increase safety at schools that are already showing low transmission rates. He said there have only been 800 cases linked to in-person learning since August 1, out of 565,000 confirmed cases statewide. He also said the biggest shift back to in-person learning has been in the last week, and more than half of all schools are at least on a hybrid system.

Judge grants restraining order to North County parents, overturning pandemic-related school rules

Judge grants restraining order to North County parents, overturning pandemic-related school rules and last updated 2021-03-16 02:44:04-04 (KGTV) -- A judge granted a temporary restraining order in favor of a group of North County parents who sued the state in an effort to overturn pandemic-related rules they say prevent school districts from reopening. Judge Cynthia Freeland said that the state's framework for reopening K-12 schools “is selective in its applicability, vague in its terms, and arbitrary in its prescriptions.” “With the mental health effects resulting from (or being exacerbated by) remote learning, one can conclude that disparate treatment being experienced by children affected by the January 2021 Framework is depriving those same children of a fundamental benefit of education, namely provision of the necessary tools to help children adjust normally to their environment,” court documents stated.

Gretchen Whitmer calling for legislation that would ensure children return to school full time this fall. “I think a lot of parents are feeling kind of hopeless about this school year,” said Bagley. “Let’s make sure that next fall we don’t get the same kind of rerun of excuse after excuse being offered of not getting kids back into the classroom. We’re trying to get in front of it before it becomes a flashpoint issue.”

Leaders propose Saturday school option to help BCPS students

Saturday school -- it's an option Baltimore County is giving its schools.|| Coronavirus updates | Maryland's latest numbers | Get tested | Vaccine Info ||While the idea isn't going over well with administrators, and what the district is doing to smooth things over, the district is considering Saturday school for students who may have fallen behind during the coronavirus pandemic. But it's how that extra help is being rolled out that concerns some Baltimore County principals.App users tap here to vote in poll: Would you send your kids to Saturday school? The proposal has apparently been on the drawing board since December, but it was only this past week that it started to take shape. It's an academic program that would bring students, needing extra help, back to campus on Saturdays or at other times during the year. Tom Dehart, executive director at Council of Administrative and Supervisory Employees, said it was the timing of the rollout that threw everyone off.“Principals and assistant principals and school leaders had five days of anxiety and angst trying to get this together when it was not necessary,” Dehart said. But school officials said that was never their intent.“The intent here is to not be restrictive and the idea of a Saturday is really to supplement,” Mary McComas, Baltimore County Schools chief academic officer said.In fact, the district believes the Saturday school model would help more than 10,000 students, that's roughly 60 students per school. Those same students would be given at least 21 hours of academic support.“We have been hiring people for Saturdays is one ask. Sometimes, it's easier to find people to stay later in the work day to provide after school support and in working with our principals, they've asked for greater flexibility,” McComas said. The union said the adjustments will help make the difference in how the program is received and how it will be carried out.“There's a lot more flexibility principals and assistants at school will be able to target programs really specific to their schools,” Dehart said. And that appears to be the goal for both sides.WBAL-TV 11 News was told that Saturday school program could start as early as April.
