Today, May 30, is Indian Arrival Day and the celebrations have already begun. Many will see “arrival” in the literal sense, the first batch on the Fatel Razack in 1845.
ALMOST THREE decades ago it was a defining but disappointing moment when prime minister Patrick Manning announced that May 30, 1995 would be designated Indian Arrival Day and declared a public holiday. However, the government stated that after 1995 the holiday would be shortened to Arrival Day.
THE Prime Minister has saluted the bold and daring risks indentured Indians took, when they fearlessly and courageously made the unknown trip to Trinidad and Tobago, 179 years ago, on May 30, 1845.
