New Delhi: After releasing the first batch of anti-COVID drug 2-DG developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday termed the drug as a new ray of hope and said this is a great example of India’s scientific prowess.
Singh along with Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan released the first batch of 2-DG today.

The cumulative caseload stands at 2,49,65,463, including 2,11,74,076 recoveries, 35,16,997 active cases and 2,74,390 deaths.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan on Monday released the first batch of Anti-COVID drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The drug has been developed by DRDO's Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) in collaboration with Dr Reddy's Laboratories. DRDO Chairman Dr G Satheesh Reddy said that DRDO and Dr Reddy's lab had gone through the complete trials and conducted trials across 30 hospitals and on a large number of patients. The first batch of 10,000 doses of 2DG medicine would be launched early next week, informed DRDO officials told ANI on Friday.

Union defence minister Rajnath Singh today released the first batch of the anti-Covid-19 drug, 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG), which has been granted emergency approval by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). The anti-Covid oral drug has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation's (DRDO's) leading laboratory- Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) in collaboration with Dr Reddy's Laboratories.

DRDO's Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences collaborated with Hyderabad-based pharma giant Dr. Reddy's Laboratories for the 2DG Covid-19 medicine.

First batch of 2-DG dedicated to nation
The first batch of the anti-Covid drug 2-DG (2-deoxy-D-glucose), developed by the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) scientists jointly with their counterparts at Dr Reddy’s Laboratories in Hyderabad, was dedicated to the nation by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday.
The INMAS, a lab under the Defence Research and Development Organisation, had developed the molecule for treating cancer, but it has not been repurposed for treating Covid-19 infection as adjuvant as well as standalone medication.
New Delhi: The first batch of anti-COVID oral drug 2-DG, developed by the DRDO, was released on Monday by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Health Minister Harsh Vardhan.
The Drugs Controller General of India (DGCI) approved the 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) drug for emergency use as an adjunct therapy in moderate to severe coronavirus patients earlier this month.
In his brief remarks, Singh said the drug has brought a new ray of hope for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
"This is a great example of the scientific prowess of our country," he said.
At the same time, the defence minister said that it is not the time to relax and get tired as there is nothing definitive about the course of the pandemic.
