Sydney FC break three-year drought

A-League - Sydney v Western Sydney Sport by Daniel Garb Premium Content Subscriber only The deftest of headers from Brazilian star Bobo has ended a Sydney Derby winning drought for Sydney FC that stretched back to December 2018 and in the process delivered a hammer blow to the finals chances of their fierce rivals, Western Sydney Wanderers in front of 17,121 fans at the SCG. In a derby that lacked the fluidity of others in recent times, in no small part due to the patchy SCG pitch, Bobo was able to guide home his tenth goal of the season from close range with a superbly timed flick from a Milos Ninkovic cross in the 62nd minute.

Adelaide closes in on finals dream

by Val Migliaccio 23rd May 2021 8:14 PM | Updated: 8:30 PM Adelaide United edged closer to securing a finals berth after a narrow win over Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park on Sunday. Adelaide is sitting third, three points behind second-placed Sydney which it hosts at home on Saturday night. The 1-0 win courtesy of a Craig Goodwin goal didn’t tell the full story. Adelaide completed a clean sweep, three wins over Victory in a season, for the first time since the A-League’s debut season in 2005/06. Goodwin scored his seventh goal of the season after a brilliant combination with impressive midfielder Josh Cavallo.

Goodwin strike earns Adelaide crucial points against Roar

Adelaide United bolstered their position in the top six with a gritty 1-0 triumph over fellow finals hopefuls Brisbane Roar. Craig Goodwin's fine early strike settled the matter for the Reds who also had custodian James Delianov to thank for pulling off an excellent first half penalty save from Joey Champness. Those pieces of excellence from Adelaide's attacking talisman and recalled number one were the difference-making moments that highlighted an otherwise cagey affair at Coopers Stadium.

Nabbout injury sours dominant City win over United

Share on Twitter The A-League leaders opened up an 11-point lead at the top of the table at AAMI Park on Thursday night, with Jamie Maclaren scoring a brace to become City's all-time leading goalscorer. But the victory was soured after just 25 minutes when Nabbout succumbed to a left leg injury when attempting a pass. Nabbout, who missed five games at the start of the season with a hamstring injury and last week's win over Perth with a groin issue, had to be assisted from the field and down the tunnel in distress. He was quickly replaced by Marco Tilio.

Mauk brace sees Reds pile more pain on struggling Victory

Share on Twitter Adelaide skipper Stefan Mauk scored a brace while impact substitute Kusini Yengi scored one goal and assisted another to deliver the Reds their fourth win on the bounce and dial up the pressure on Victory boss Grant Brebner. Jake Brimmer's spectacular free kick got Victory off to the perfect start in the 28th minute, before the Reds hit back, then seized control at Marvel Stadium. Brebner made four changes to the team thumped 6-0 by Melbourne City, while Adelaide goalkeeper James Delianov failed a late fitness test, opening the door for youngster Joe Gauci. A lively Victory had three big chances to snare the lead in the space of six minutes - with Robbie Kruse scuppering two in the 12th and 16th minutes and Rudy Gestede heading another over the bar in the 17th.
