Undaunted by COVID, Physics Circus beefs up its interactive learning experience for school-aged children

Such was the case for the volunteers behind UC Santa Barbara’s Physics Circus, an interactive science outreach program offered to school-aged children by the university’s Department of Physics. Typically offered on site at local elementary schools as an assembly demonstration show or as part of an after school family science night, Physics Circus and its cadre of hardworking and enthusiastic students were suddenly cut off from their audience, stifled in their ability to bring physics to the kids.

On day two of the U.S. Alpine Championships at Aspen Highlands, it was an international giant slalom podium, with Denver University’s Tobias Kogler (Austria) in first, University of Utah’s Joachim Bakken Lien (Norway) in second, and U.S. Alpine Ski Team athlete Bridger Gile in third.  It was another early morning for the athletes, staff, and race organizers, and the conditions were challenging, according to a U.S. Ski Team report. Though the temperatures were cooler than on Monday, the wind caused a problem and took the moisture out of the snow, causing issues for the salt to do its job and firm up the surface.

Mikaela Shiffrin would ve placed 9th in men s combined at worlds

“Dominant was the word that Tiger Shaw, the president and CEO of U.S. Ski and Snowboard, used to describe Shiffrin s performance. “Look at how fast she was in the super-G and then acing the slalom as usual,” Shaw said. Super-G leader Federica Brignone lost her grip and fell at the third gate of the slalom. Two-time defending world champion Wendy Holdener also failed to finish the second leg. Likewise in the men’s race, 2017 world champion Luca Aerni was among those who failed to finish the slalom leg. Austria’s Marco Schwarz narrowly edged Alexis Pinturault for gold while Loic Meillard took bronze despite finishing more than a second out.
