Shock, anger and sadness are sweeping over the community with the death of Officer Jason Shuping, who was killed in the line of duty Wednesday night in Concord.
City officials announced Thursday afternoon that a candlelight vigil will be held tonight in Shuping's honor. More details about the vigil will be released this morning.Â
A procession from the Charlotte Medical Examiner's Office to Powles Funeral Home in Rockwell began around 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17.
Shuping joined CPD in 2019 and served as an officer for a year and a half. He died at the age of 25.
Shuping was from Salisbury and graduated from East Rowan High School in 2014. He also attended the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, where he was a former track team member.

Concord officials identified the fatally shot officer as Jason Shuping, 25, who had been with the department since 2019. The wounded officer was identified as Kaleb Robinson, 23. His injuries are not life threatening, officials said.
The suspect is 29 years old and has a Charlotte address, officials said.
The shootings occurred just before 11 p.m. in the parking lot of the Sonic Drive-In at 7761 Gateway Lane, near Bruton Smith Boulevard, Concord officials said. Concord borders Charlotte, on the Mecklenburg-Cabarrus county line.
Investigators say the incident began with a 911 call around 10:20 p.m. about a vehicle that crashed near the Exit 49 ramp of northbound Interstate 85, officials said.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina police officer and an armed suspect were killed outside a fast food restaurant during a shootout that also left another officer wounded, police said.
The shooting happened late Wednesday night in Concord, a city just northeast of Charlotte.
Authorities identified the slain officer as Officer Jason Shuping, who joined the force last year. The wounded officer was taken to a hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening, the city’s police department said on its Twitter page.
The Charlotte Observer reported that the shooting happened in the parking lot of a Sonic Drive-in, after a 911 call about a nearby car crash. A passing motorist told responding officers that a man who was on foot had tried to steal her vehicle at the Sonic, police said.

The Concord Police Department released the names of the fallen officer and an injured officer around 11:10 a.m. Thursday.

The CPD statement giving his name read: "Today we are mourning the loss of a beloved family member who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty late Wednesday night. CONCORD, N.C. (WBTV) - One police officer is dead and another is injured after an officer-involved shooting in Concord late Wednesday night. Officials say the suspect in the shooting is dead.
The Concord Police Department identified the officer killed as 25-year-old Jason Shuping. He had 1.5 years of service. The injured officer was identified as 23-year-old Kaleb Robinson.
