Brood X offers something beyond noise and wonder. Namely, it offers a source of free-range, no-cost, eco-friendly proteinâone so good that Bun Lai is already out foraging. A New Haven, Connecticutâbased chef renowned for pioneering sustainable sushi, Lai is currently in Washington, DC, where the cicadas have already begun to hatch, collecting as many as he can find. When heâs done, heâll host a cicada-based popup dinner in the woods with his bounty. Lai plans to serve the cicadas in a paella, on a pizza, and as a sushi ingredient. Heâs going to make some using indigenous preparation methods, too. âCicadas taste a bit like nuts, as many insects do, but with every bite, my nose is reminded of popcorn, too,â he says.

Some are waiting for their arrival with trepidation, others are curious what they might taste like: Americans are swapping tips on how best to weather the storm when billions of cicadas soon emerge after 17 years underground.
Before invading parks and people's gardens, the insects have already conquered the airwaves, social media and newspapers, especially in parts of the eastern, central and southern United States where "Brood X" is due to emerge.

It's been 17 years since we last heard the sound of the Brood X cicada. Any day now, trillions of them will emerge out of the ground in parts of the eastern and Midwestern United States. It's a wonder of nature that we get to witness once every 17 years.
Now, cicadas and Brood X have been an inspiration to researchers well beyond the world of entomology. Below, we've got three stories on the remarkable things humankind has learned from these insects.
'Cicada-Licious'
MEGHNA CHAKRABARTI: The last time Brood X emerged was in 2004. And Jenna Jadin was a PhD student in evolutionary biology and ecology at the University of Maryland at the time. A well-known cicada expert, Mike Raupp, a professor at the University of Maryland, he had been inundated with press calls about the cicada emergence.
