Year in Review: COVID-19 impacted everyone

MILTON — The coronavirus pandemic impacted nearly every aspect of life in the Central Susquehanna Valley, with non-essential businesses being forced to close their doors, churches conducting services online and schools switching to virtual learning models. With few cars passing along Broadway on March 16 in Milton, the owners of two restaurants located in the heart of the downtown business area expressed their concerns about the impact the coronavirus could have on their livelihoods. “This is awful, mostly for my employees,” Lisa Showers, the owner of Lisa’s Milltown Deli, said as she stood behind the counter at her business. “I’m really worried about them. We have to cut the hours just to break even.”

County awards $1.7 million in CARES funds

SUNBURY — The Northumberland County Commissioners on Thursday doled out more than $1.7 million in County Relief Block Grant (CRBG) funding through the federal CARES Act to municipalities, schools, businesses and nonprofit organizations. Commissioner Chair Sam Schiccatano said SEDA-COG accepted applications on behalf of the county from the entities applying for the funds. After SEDA-COG reviewed the applications to see if funding criteria was met, Schiccatano said the commissioners made the final decisions on how to award the funding. He noted that many municipalities received funding to replace radios and related equipment for police and fire personnel. "This (pandemic) was a reason to improve communication," Schiccatano said. "A lot of the radios that were replaced were old radios."

West Branch of Susquehanna to approach flood stage

MILTON — Melting snow coupled with more than 2 inches of rain which is forecast to fall across the Central Susquehanna Valley could drive the West Branch of the Susquehanna River to near flood stage, according to a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College. Meteorologist Craig Evanego said the rain will begin falling early Thursday morning. “The rain will probably change over to snow (Thursday) night, before ending Friday morning,” he said. “It will be much colder Christmas day.” In Milton, Evanego said 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches of rain is expected to fall. “A lot of the snow we had is going to melt,” he said. “There is a potential there for some flooding issues as the rain is coming down on Thursday. You could see ponding of water, where snow is clogging drains.”
