senate primary beating the former governor. more now from jess sterling. reporter: many republicans here breathing a sigh of relief at the outcome of the senate republican primary here. missouri attorney general eric schmidt easily defeating former governor and also congresswoman. this race had national implications largely because eric greitens was fighting for a comeback. republicans believe that if he would have won the nomination for senate, democrats would have had a chance to win this seat. something that they have not done in a decade here in deep red missouri. but eric schmidt the conservative attorney general pushed back and easily defeated greitens. and so now this seat is almost certain to stay in republican hands come november, one fewer thing to worry about as they try to win the control of the senate in less than three months.
