At Marisa Newman Projects, the artist presents an installation exploring his first experiences of identifying the self through colour
‘WHITE is the spiritual colour of our times, the clearness of which directs all our actions. It is neither grey white nor ivory white, but pure white.’ How far we have come today from statements such as this one from Theo van Doesburg’s 1929 essay ‘Towards White Painting’. I’m not accusing the Dutch modernist of racism, but it’s hard to overlook the contradiction in the claim that white is both a colour and the condition of visibility as such – exemplified, naturally, by the proverbial white cube of the gallery. Davide Balliano s luscious paintings defy simple categorisation. Layers of plaster, gesso and varnish build up to create an illusion of three dimensions that suggest never ending space. Smithsonian American Art Museum receives major gift of extraordinary Amish quilts

.-The Smithsonian American Art Museum has received an extraordinary gift of masterpiece Amish quilts from the collection of Faith and Stephen Brown. The group of quilts is the largest and most significant collection of Amish quilts to enter any major art museums permanent collection. The quilts were made between the 1880s and 1940s and embody the astonishing design innovation and stitching skills of Amish women from communities in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania and other states.
