i always think that in the reagan/carter battle, they both appeared on the same stage in the one and only debate and reagan just seemed he wasn t we liked him. he smiled a lot and that was it. yeah. he dispelled some of the negative impressions about him with that debate. but i would say it was mainly the negative economy and iranian hostage crisis that elected him. but personality had a lot to do with it and i think in 2000 those debates between bush and gore made a difference. absolutely. bush came off as normal joshing around and gore of course had that strange sigh and the confrontation between bush and gore on the debates. so it can matter in a close race. finally, i think it s not always a winner. i thought that richard nixon,
