PODCAST | Inside 'Pappyland' with author Wright Thompson

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Pappy Van Winkle wasn’t always the most sought-after bourbon in the world. In fact, the Van Winkle family would have faded from the distilling business altogether were it not for third-generation proprietor Julian Van Winkle III’s toiling in the 1980s and 1990s to revive his grandfather’s legacy. “The thing you learn is that Julian inherited this failing business essentially in 1981, when his father died, and for 15 or 16 years he couldn’t get anybody to buy this stuff,” said author and ESPN senior writer Wright Thompson. “PAPPYLAND: A Story of Family, Fine Bourbon, and the Things That Last,” details the history of Louisville's Van Winkle family in the bourbon distilling business.

'Expand horizons' through the gift of a good read | Nvdaily

As many area residents plan to celebrate Christmas at home this year, local bookstore owners are touting the benefits of giving a good book for any age. “I love books,” said Kara Fogle, owner of Boo’s Books, a children’s bookstore at Fort Valley Nursery, 1175 S. Hisey Ave., Woodstock. “A book is pretty versatile entertainment,” she said. “[It’s] something that you can revisit over and over again. … It’s something that you can do anywhere, anytime.” Whether you’re buying for a longtime book-lover or a new reader, she suggested people consider “expanding horizons” through quality literature, illustrations, photography, education and an unforgettable story.

Halls Chophouse serving pours of rare 25-year-old whiskey to benefit Happy Wheels

Halls Chophouse restaurants will send a historic bottle of bourbon on a journey across the state beginning Monday. A bottle of 25-year Old Rip Van Winkle bourbon will travel between all four Halls Chophouse locations, as a part of the restaurant’s "Chophouse for a Cause" charity series. The bottle is one of only 710 produced by Pappy Van Winkle, an opportunity company president, Julian Van Winkle calls, "a once in a lifetime offering." Every dollar from every drop goes to Happy Wheels, a nonprofit organization providing toys to hospitalized children across South Carolina. The one-ounce bourbon pours are $500 and include a hand-etched Halls Glencairn whiskey glass and the opportunity to sign the collector’s case, which will reside at Halls Chophouse Charleston once the campaign comes to a close. The bottle was donated to Halls Chophouse by Rick Havekost, owner of Micky Finn's.
