Krissie Harris runs for 2nd Ward City Council seat

Ald. Krissie Harris (2nd), a fifth-generation Evanston resident, said she comes from a “family of service,” bringing a strong sense of community into her work. In September 2022, Mayor Daniel Biss appointed Harris to City Council following former Ald. Peter Braithwaite’s (2nd) resignation. She’s now running for reelection against Evanston/Skokie School District 65 teacher Patricia.

Evanston Dance Ensemble to bring audience into world of Narnia

After a three-year wait, Evanston Dance Ensemble will put on its seventh production of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” Thursday through Sunday at the Louis Theater on Northwestern’s campus. EDE Artistic Director Christina Ernst said putting on the performance meant coming “full-circle” and was “healing” for the ensemble. This marks EDE’s first production.

Bill Banis, former Division of Student Affairs vice president, dies

William “Bill” Banis, the former vice president for the Division of Student Affairs, died Jan. 23 at age 75, Northwestern announced Tuesday. Banis started at NU in 1994, working with University Career Services, which is now known as Northwestern Career Advancement. He then worked at the Division of Student Affairs until he retired in 2011..

Jeff Eden's 'God Save the USSR' named a Foreign Affairs best book

History Prof. Jeff Eden’s book on World War II-era Muslim life in the Soviet Union was named one of Foreign Affairs’ Best Books of 2022.  “God Save the USSR: Soviet Muslims and the Second World War” is one of 33 works selected by Foreign Affairs. The 2021 book incorporates speeches, eyewitness accounts, memoirs, reports, interviews.

'If You're Reading This NU' invites discussions on mental health

After becoming friends last academic year, Weinberg sophomores Seela Hinrichs and Finola Summerville realized that NU students lack mental health resources at an institution with a culture of perfectionism.  “I feel like everyone in our classroom is always struggling with something,” Hinrichs said. To address mental health stigmas, Hinrichs and Summerville co-founded a NU chapter.
