Rain emergency declared in Rawalpindi

Rawalpindi : The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Saturday declared a rain emergency in the district directing residents settled along Nullah Leh and in low-lying areas to remain on high alert and move to safer places. The residents should adopt precautionary measure because water level in Nullah Leh could touch the dangerous level during heavy rainfall in coming days, Wasa has warned.
The water level in Nullah Leh here at Katarian was 11.4 feet while 7 feet in Gwalmandi during heavy rainfall on Saturday.
Wasa Managing Director Raja Shaukat Mehmood told ‘The News’ that ‘Rain Emergency’ has been declared due to heavy rainfall in the coming days from Saturday to Tuesday. “The residents settled along Nullah Leh and in low-lying localities have been directed to shift to some safer places to avert any difficulty during heavy rainfall,” he said adding the leaves of all staff members have been cancelled and they will perform duty at different points.

The water shortage has intensified in the garrison city as the groundwater level went down around 700 feet on Friday while the water in Rawal Dam and Khanpur Dam has touched the dead level.
“Water supply in Khayaban-e-Sir Syed is available only three days a week while on the remaining four days citizens have no choice but form a queue to fetch water from outside. The serious shortage of water has made our lives miserable especially in this hot weather,” said Saeed Shams, a resident of the locality.

Nullah Leh cleanliness drive under way ahead of monsoon season
Inspection of machinery, monitoring possibility of floods part of efforts

Rawalpindi Commissioner (RC) Gulzar Hussain Shah on Sunday issued directions to start dredging and de-silting of Nullah Leh and formed a monitoring team to look after the drive.
Under the supervision of Local Government and Community Development Director Amna Rafique, Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) officials inspected the cleanliness drive along Nullah Leh on Gawalmandi on Sunday.
WASA managing director (MD), while briefing RC on the cleanliness drive, said that the Punjab government had released a grant worth Rs30 million to WASA Rawalpindi during the financial year.

RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government has released Rs30 million to clean areas along Leh Nullah to avoid flooding during the upcoming monsoon season. All civic bodies have been directed to coordinate and prepare for monsoon.
This was discussed in a meeting, held to review arrangements for the monsoon season with Commissioner Syed Gulzar Hussain Shah in the chair. The meeting was attended by Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) Managing Director Raja Shaukat Mehmood, Rescue 1122 director, RWMC Managing Director Awais Manzoor Tarar, Local Government Department Director Amna Raffique and other officials concerned.

Rawalpindi: On the directions of Commissioner Rawalpindi Division, the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) started dredging of Nullah Leh here on Wednesday.
Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Syed Gulzar Hussain Shah has formed monitoring teams. Director Local Government and Community Development Amna Rafiq In-Charge of the monitoring teams visited Nullah Leh on Wednesday. Wasa Managing Director Raja Shaukat and other senior officials also accompanied her on the occasion.
Wasa Managing Director Raja Shaukat also briefed Commissioner Rawalpindi Division that Punjab government has provided Rs30 million for dredging of Nullah Leh. The process of dredging of Nullah Leh will be completed before the onset of monsoon, he claimed.

Youth kills sister over marriage issue

FAISALABAD: A youth shot his sister dead over a marriage issue in City Tandlianwala police limits on Saturday. A police spokesman said 22-year-old Nasreen was gunned down by accused Iqbal over the marriage dispute. The police took the body in custody and started investigation.

BAHAWALPUR: Three children were killed and six others injured when their school van collided with a parked truck near Khanda Mor Adda Israni on Hasilpur Road near Khairpur Tamewali, about 40 kilometres from here, on Friday.
According to District Emergency Officer Baqir Hussain and police sources, a van was carrying nine schoolboys to Hasilpur when the driver could not spot the parked truck near Khanda Mor and the van collided with it. They said the truck also was not properly parked on roadside which resulted in the accident.
Pink bollworm causes loss of 1m cotton bales annually

FAISALABAD: Farmers should adopt proper management strategy against pink bollworm as the insect causes a loss of more than 1 million cotton bales every year.
This was stated by Deputy Director Agriculture (Extension) Chaudhry Khalid Mehmood while addressing an agriculture seminar at Jaranwala. He said that the Agriculture Department had started creating awareness among farmers about attack of pink bollworm on the cotton crop. He said the pink bollworm goes into winter nap during November and December and its eggs remain present on cotton seeds, branches and dried leafs in farms and ginning factories. When they get sufficient temperature after winter, they again become active, he told. He said that cotton growers should act upon the advice of agricultural experts and avoid cultivating cotton crop before April 1 to save it from attack of pink bollworm. He said that the Agriculture Department awareness campaign would continue till March 31.
