This week, wildland firefighters will begin a series of prescribed burns at four locations southwest of Wilson in the Teton to Snake Fuels Reduction Project area.
The controlled fires will be initiated by helicopter and ground crews to help clear highly flammable fuels, such as brush and dead vegetation, and prevent the spread of forest fires.
âIt is so important as we embrace how to live with fire on the landscape to do fuels reduction projects,â said Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Fire Marshal Kathy Clay.
Wildfires are unpredictable and unavoidable, Clay said, but preventative treatments give firefighters a better chance of containing wildfire spread before it reaches neighborhood front doors.
Why Jackson Hole Mountain Resortâs short-lived Gaper Day fire started is unknown, but an errant firework may have been the reason.
Thatâs according to resort risk director and Teton Village Fire Department Chief Jon Bishop, who told the Jackson Hole Daily he was âuncertain of a causeâ but suspected fireworks.
âThe fire had originated up in the trees a bit, so thatâs pretty much the only cause I could think of,â Bishop said.
Fire Marshall Kathy Clay likewise couldnât pin down an official reason for the blaze, but she and Jackson Hole Fire/EMS Chief Brady Hansen thought it was probably âhuman caused.â
