Officials in Penang, a religiously diverse island near Malaysia’s border with Thailand have announced the founding of the island’s first Buddhist non-profit hospital, the Kek Lok Si Charitable Medical Centre. The center, scheduled to open its doors to the public in May, has pledged to keep fees below those of other charitable hospitals in the area.
Kek Lok Si Charitable Medical Centre will be on the grounds of Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. The temple is home to a 36.6-meter bronze statue of Guanyin and a jade Buddha statue—believed to be one of the largest in the world—made from jade mined in Myanmar and carved in China.

Though I’m not a competitive person, I’ve always loved playing board games because of the social element they encourage. My fondness for them is heightened by being forced to collaborate or sabotage other players in-game, thus interacting with them in the process, as I’m not the best at making friends.
It’s why our group of introverts at Vulcan Post love playing tabletop games together too, and in fact, we’ve even written a whole opinion piece on the advantages of board games over video games.

Closed shophouses in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. Strict coronavirus lockdown has left many businesses struggling to survive.
South China Morning Post
It has become a familiar scene on Chulia Street:
Mamak Indian Muslim workers sweat behind face masks as they fill brown paper bags with rice and curry, feeding residents who would prefer not to – and indeed, until a month ago, could not – dine in restaurants.
Chinese uncles and aunties wait behind kerbside stalls for the next rider of a sputtering motorcycle, who will exchange a few ringgit for a plastic bag filled with hot soup and noodles. Behind them hang red Chinese altars covered in ritual ash next to rows of padlocked shophouses that, like closed eyes, seal George Town’s multicultural secrets behind metallic shutters.

The lighting up of Kek Lok Si is an annual affair that Penangites look forward to every Chinese New Year. This year’s event may not have the usual crowd physically present, but the ceremony was still witnessed by hundreds as it was streamed live via various social media platforms last Sunday on
7th February. The ceremony also included a prayer session and ended with fireworks.
The lights will be in place until
11th March, so we might just be able to head over to the temple in Penang to catch a glimpse of it if the COVID-19 situation stabilises by then.

TOWN: The Covid-19 pandemic has brought a lot of changes and even Penang’s iconic 130-year-old Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam has not been spared as its annual lighting-up ceremony will only be done via live streaming online.
Annually, hundreds of people would gather around the temple to witness the lighting-up ceremony which would transform the temple into a fairyland of lights.
Kek Lok Si Temple trustee, Datuk Seri Steven Ooi said the ceremony, scheduled for Feb 7, would proceed through live streaming as devotees are not allow to gather in the temple due to the standard operating procedure (SOP) during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.
